WELCOME TO THE BLOG
It's that time of year… the seasons are changing here in Colorado. It's time to bring out the jackets and sweaters and drink a Pumpkin Spice Latte... but where will you find the time to transition your closet?
While there are times that a full closet swap is in order, I personally prefer to stick to a one-closet solution and just rotate the items so that current seasonal pieces are at my fingertips and off-season garments are organized in the deeper, more difficult to access spots.
If, however, you are ready to do a swap, we are ready to help! Read on for the steps we follow to organize your closet for the seasons.
First, we ensure everything is clean and in great condition before storing or donating. We fold or hang with care, and if necessary, add garment bags to protect items from dust. Keep in mind that when storing sweaters, they should always be folded and not hung.
When pulling out next season's items from storage, we will check the items are clean and ready for wear. This is a great time to do a quick edit to ensure that everything still fits and is in style. Outdated items can be stored or donated. If anything is in need of alterations or repair, we will put it aside.
Now that we have removed last season’s clothing and edited the clothing for this season, it's time to space plan the closet. We recommend organizing by occasion or color. For example, if you have work clothing, weekend, resort, formal and loungewear, we will likely want to separate these items by occasion.
If most of your clothing is multi-occasion or for one main occasion, we will likely sort pieces by color.
Dresser drawers are great for smaller items such as socks, undergarments and pajamas. I personally do not take the time to fold any of the above in my own home (hello ADHD), so a drawer to toss it into works great and hides the mess.
If you happen to prefer more of a micro-organization approach to the drawers, we recommend drawer dividers and linen boxes to separate categories easily. If you have some, we will gladly use them or we can source them for you. We try to use the bottom drawers for out of season items that won't be accessed regularly.
Step #5: Determine Storage for Shoes and Accessories
When swapping out shoes and other accessories, we take note of where they will be stored. For example, I tend to keep my casual summer shoes in a bin to optimize space. My boots and other shoes tend to stay in the closet year-round.
Fall boots, dressy sandals and heels all need space to breathe in the closet or they can end up getting crunched and lose their luster pretty quickly. We will assess your particular setup and determine the best solution for your shoes and accessories.
I encourage you to complete this process BEFORE shopping for the new season. You may have items you have forgotten about, allowing you to splurge on something amazing instead of replenishing items you already own!
Editing the closet seasonally doesn't have to be a chore. If it feels like one, don't hesitate to ask for help bringing function to your space – we love a quick closet swap, and we’ve got your back! Contact us and let's get to know each other.
