ASK THE EXPERT
Before unpacking, designate a space for essential items like scissors, markers, and trash bags. This prevents constant searching for tools you need. Our team has lulu fanny packs with box openers, sharpies, post-its and more. Keeping everything at your fingertips and easily accessible is the main idea.
Focus on one space at a time, starting with the most essential rooms like the kitchen and primary suite. This creates manageable wins and prevents overwhelming chaos. It also makes it possible to function in the main tasks of daily life as quickly as possible. We all feel better when we have a nice place to sleep and a way to make our coffee in the morning.
Work in focused 90-minute sessions with short breaks. This maximizes productivity while preventing decision fatigue during the organizing process. We prefer 180 minute sessions with small breaks but for many the 90 minute rule is golden! You want enough downtime to be mindful of your energy levels but not so much downtime that you lose steam…
Pack essential items you’ll need immediately in a clearly marked box or suitcase. Include basics like toiletries, phone chargers, and a few days’ worth of clothes. Keep in mind any necessary medications and don’t forget the Advil! You will be happy you have it after a long day of unpacking.
When unpacking, touch items only once by making immediate decisions about where they belong. This prevents shuffling items around multiple times. No stress – when everything is unpacked you can absolutely make adjustments and tweaks but avoid the temptation to get in the spiral of perfection too early…
Before arranging furniture or storing items, measure your spaces and create a basic floor plan. This prevents multiple reorganizing sessions. We have a neat tool with graph lines and magnets to plan a space. You can also do it on graph paper and cut out the shapes… each square is 12 inches to scale.
Organize items based on frequency of use – daily items at eye level, seasonal items higher up or in less accessible spaces. We call these Zones 1–3. The more frequent the task the more valuable it is to have all necessary items at your fingertips to complete it.
Unpack and sort items onto folding tables so that you can see what you have and make a plan before placing items. Use post-it notes to make the plan. You will be amazed at how much you are able to declutter and how much more efficient the final layout will be.
Organized By Keli & Co. is ready to help with any project, large or small. Give them a call today at 720-637-4020 or visit their website at organizedbykeli.com.
